A woman inSomalia is condemned to death for conceiving a child after being raped by her uncle. A six-year-old Iranian girl dies of an infection due to her “purity cut”. A former Muslim speaking out against the abuses of her mother and sisters is threatened with death and disowned by her family. What do all these women have in common? All are victims of Islam. Muslims view women differently than the Western world does. The Qur’an is very adamant in it’s rules set down by the prophet Muhammed concerning women. These specific beliefs not only color the way Muslims treat their wives and daughters, but also repress and abuse the women they are claiming to protect. Women are pushed down and never reach their full potential, all in the name of holiness. The Qur’an, the “final revelation” of Allah, has very clear, distinct rules on women. It maintains the women “…shall have right equal to the rights against them, but men have a degree above them…”(Surah2:228), but it also says that women are the property of their husbands, just like a field or plot of land (Surah 2:223). Also, their witness of an event of crime is worth half that of a man’s. A man must not touch a woman before prayers or going to the mosque, because she is unclean (Caner 138). Women are constantly separated from men, and if a man fears his wives are not as good of Muslims as he would wish, he is told, in the Qur’an, to “…admonish them, beat Champ 2 them,…and banish them to beds apart.” (Surah 4:34). A woman must cover herself completely and never reveal herself to any but her husband. This has given birth to the extreme, head-to-toe burka in many countries, where even and uncovered eye could result in a beating (Stanely 33). How is this violence justified? It is proclaimed as “protection” of women against the corruption that leads to Hell. “Just look at Western women,’ we are told. “They are allowed to run around practically undressed, and so they have date-rapes, and kidnappings and such.” Women are...
