Women have struggled for centuries to obtain equal rights in all aspects of society including sports. Where women are today is nothing short of a championship victory. It was tough being a women during the 1920s but even tougher to be a women athlete. There were stereotypes that surrounded the image of a women participating in sports, “It was considered immoral and overtly masculine for women to run, jump and exert themselves in public competition” (Zeiler, 2004, p. 93). They were faced with a hypocritical approach that “women should exercise for their own health, but we’re strongly opposed to letting women participate in organized competitions and immoral and scandalous public displays.” (Zeiler, 2004, p. 94) giving women the answer that it was okay to exercise to look good but not in a form of competition because it gave away their femininity. Everyone talks and when it comes to talking a form of gossip in a harmful way and that is what all the men were doing but it was not until founder of the Modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin stated “No matter how toughened a sportswoman may be, her organism is not cut out to sustain certain shocks” (United Nations, 2007) made it the reality sparking gender discrimination in recreational and competitive sports, in 1896.
