The main point of this research-based paper is introducing the theoretical background of discrimination in organization and providing news to analysis with principle. According to Canadian Human Rights Commission website, the Canadian Human Rights Act is not only to guarantee individuals with equal opportunities in the workplace, but also to avoid discrimination in the employment (2012). The law to prevent discrimination was implement in 1978; however, discrimination in employment is always exists in Canada (Canadian Labour Relations, n.d.). Workplace discrimination was concerned by people. Therefore, this paper will discuss the basics of discrimination, the purposes to avoiding discrimination and a relevant example analysis. The research information was found in the government websites, textbook, and journal articles.

Theoretical Background of Workplace Discrimination

Discrimination in organizations is often performed as workplace diversity; in which to distinguish certain members as differentiate (Helms Mills, Mills, Forshaw, & Bratton, 2007). Diversity in workplace represents the different social groups based on ethnicity, race, age, or gender in an organization (Enchautegui-de-Jesús, Hughes, Johnston, & Joo Oh, 2006). As a typical multi-cultural country, Canada has a large group of population from immigrants. This population structure potentially increases the chance of workplace discrimination. Also, gender discrimination is a main category in workplace diversity. According to Canadian Labour Relations, although Canada has regulation and law to prevent and protect workplace discrimination, gender discrimination is still common in workforce (n.d.).
