Have you ever wondered why a war started and if it could have been prevented? World War one is one of the wars out for many wars that occurred that people wonder if it could have been preventable. World War One occurred in the years 1914 to 1918. Many people believed that this war was caused by the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand. It was a spark to the war but there are many other reasons that led to this war. Some of these reasons happened as far back in the late 1800’s. The main factors besides the assassination are, nationalism, militarism, imperialism, and the system of alliances.
Before World War I, Europe experienced a period of peace. Throughout this time, there was a rapid industrial and commercial change happening all over the world, with many of the western powers expanding their trade and empires of colonies. However, national rivalries gradually grew and alliances emerged between many of the great European powers. Over time, countries in Europe made mutual defense agreements that would pull them into battle. If one country was attacked, allied countries were bound to defend them. This eventually split the continent into two hostile sides. The Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, later joined by Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire), and the Allies (Great Britain, France, Russia, later joined by Japan, Italy, and the United States). Economic competition and arms race also became intensely heated. Finally war broke out in 1914, a war which was unexpectedly disastrous and destructive. Another key explanation for the explosive beginning of WWI is also militarism a policy of glorying military power and keeping an army prepared for war this led to an arms race between the main countries, the arms race was a destabilizing cycle of weapons acquisitions by rival countries.
