Choose one assignment from the following possibilities. Follow the standard directions for college-level essays in your grading contract.

1. Write an essay about videos 2 & 3 above. In the first, the child is throwing a temper tantrum for a toy at Wal-mart. Watch and listen to how the father handles the situation. Do you think he handles it correctly? Would you have handled it similarly or differently? Argue for or against how he manages the situation. Next, watch the second video about a Corpus Christi mother who lost her children for spanking her two-year-old. The judge informs her that it is NEVER okay to spank. Do you agree or disagree that children should never be spanked? How should parents deal with inappropriate behavior? Your essay should influence readers as to how you believe parents should discipline and be backed up with how you have come to your ideas: research?; life experience?; observing others?; etc.

2. Go to the American Library Association's Web site at ala.org/ala/pio/piopresskits/bbbwpresskit/bannedchallenge.htm, and look at the list of the most frequently banned books of the twentieth century. After reviewing the list, choose a book that you have read. Assume that a library in your town has decided that the book you have chosen was objectionable and has removed it from the shelves.
