Technology is changing the face of business communications, examples of these are: electronic tools such as wikis, social networking tools, portable media players, personal digital assistants, and telepresence. I do think that most businesses are effectively using some of these resources, especially in the larger businesses or corporations. Telepresence is one of the electronic tools that may not be used effectively, if at all. Telepresence is the new high-end videoconferencing, it uses 50-inch plasma screens and broadcasts quality camera’s to have virtual meetings that are similar to lifelike meetings. However, these state-of-the-art rooms are expensive, ranging from $150,000 to $1,000,000. While some of these cost deal with the actual equipment, but a large percentage of the cost is coming from the large amounts of bandwidth that are required for the “virtual meeting” conferences.
Personal digital assistant, or PDA’s, such as a Blackberry ot Treo are commonly used in the work place. These devices allow your email to be pushed directly to your PDA, conduct word processing, access Web pages, and of course make phone calls. When the user has the PDA set up to full functionality, the users can literally be connected to their work 24 hours a day 7 days a week. This might be one of the most effective ways of technological communication, because the e-mails are directly pushed to the PDA. Along with that this device allows you access to web pages.
Portable media players feature the ability to broadcast steaming audio and video. Some businesses give these to their employees already loaded with new product information, general announcements, and recordings of meetings.
