Janelle Perez English 1A 10-26-08 Xenophobia Can our world be coming to an end? Foreigners have raided and bombed our county with intensive attacks and have mentally and physically abused Americans because of this incident. Many Americans are experiencing xenophobia, which is an anxiety disorder characterized by a pervasive, irrational fear or uneasiness in the presence of strangers, especially foreigners, or in new surroundings. A great example of this can be represented with the War in Iraq. Although President Bush and the US State Department have repeatedly assured the world, that the United States has no brief against Islam or the Muslim community, terrorist’s attacks have become a memory throughout America since the September 11th terrorist strikes on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Xenophobia can be best viewed in our society as racism against Muslim individuals, the economy, and the reactions of Americans. We are talking about bad and evil people who feel the need to sacrifice their lives to prove there loyalty. Even though many Muslims were born and raised here in America, their lives are at stake due to this incident. Harassed and constantly viewed as traders and terrorists, this has stirred up racism within our own country. America is said to be home of the free, and every individual has equal opportunities and rights. Racism has become a major role in society and has blinded many people to reject foreigners to a degree here in America as threats. In addition, our economy has depleted sporadically because of the war, and now all of our daily lives are a struggle to stay alive financially. Our tax dollars are contributing this war effort and has dug a deep whole for any American to stay afloat. I believe if our economy becomes stable once again things will mend together again and everything should look in our favor.
