You Can’t Handle the Truth
“Missing jacket found (at home)”, “Gwyneth Paltrow thinks negative words and sounds can hurt water’s feelings”, “New footpath gate ‘too noisy.’” These are all examples of recent headlines. This is news, today. One can look through all of the news channels there are and won't find anything of relevance to the world we live in today. Nearly every article on television today is nothing but an entertaining story exaggerated to keep your attention and get more views.
In current news reports, there are no in-depth articles about the people who are running for congress or president. The television news shows the candidates newest publicity stunts. Stations like FOX news which do broadcast “actual” news stories are so biased it feels like ludicrous propaganda, and Fox news’ Sean Hannity has been proof to that “Hannity claimed that Obama referred to the death of four Americans in the September 2012 attack on a U.S. compound in Benghazi as ‘just a bump in the road.’”. Even worse are shows like The Daily show and The Colbert report, which in addition to being heavily biased, are satirizing actual events. For example Jon Stewart, the host of The Daily Show, said, “The Westboro Baptist Church is no more a church than Church’s Fried Chicken is a church” (Nastasi). The stories that involve new laws passing never even seem to make it to the silver screen because that’s not what the public wants. They want to hear about how someone’s dog is missing or if Kylie Jenner’s lips are real or fake. As a society we no longer care about what’s really important.
News stations have begun to receive competition from not only more entertaining television shows, but also the more convenient online news or even just silly stories shared on social media. The new entertainment corporations sell the idea of new groundbreaking stories, however, their biggest concern is how to make more money.
