You Should Not Judge People by the Clothes They Wear

It goes without saying, that there are proverbs about people’s attitude to the clothes in every language. It means that this subject has always been one of the most essential in different cultures. Let’s take Russian «По одежде встречают, по уму провожают» and English «Good clothes open all doors».
From ancient times the things people wore were not just clothes but a means of estimation. Ancient people used different accessories to show their social status. For example, tribes’ chiefs wore beads made of animal fangs,birds’ feathers. These were distinctive features of chiefe’s superiority. During Middle Ages people’s clothes demonstrated detailed information about his or her origin, occupation, family and social status.
Nobody can refuse the fact that nowadays it is common to judge people by the clothes they wear. Does not it mean that, in spite of the social progress, the way of thinking, estimating and perceiving the world of many people is still primitive?
Considering a question in all its aspects I cannot help mentioning that clothes can be an additional source of getting information about a person’s character, inner qualities, behavior, merits and weaknesses, self-esteem, virtues, occupation, likes and dislikes, the place of living, nationality, emotional state and life problems. I really believe that such a way of estimation cannot be the only one.
Unfortunately, there is a tendency in a modern world to judge people only by their appearance. Have youever come across the situation when we could remember a mentioned person only by the clothes he or she was wearing at the time? I guess it is the way it is because of a number of stereotypes on the basis of which an image of a successful, modern person is created. The estimation of personal qualities is often reduced to: beautiful or not, well- or bad-dressed.
In my opinion, the way of judging people in Western and Oriental cultures differs greatly. Europeans and Americans in their daily life do not care...
