Youth Homelessness
Society focuses strongly on adult homelessness and has fewer concerns about youth homelessness and the effects that it has on them. Some of today’s youth is homeless for reasons of their own, but society don’t focus on the fact that their homeless all together. To understand why there’s such a wide number of youth that’s homeless, the public and experts must dig dipper into what’s going on with them emotionally and physically.
Youth homelessness is high due to the facts and studies that show majority of the youth that’s homeless are school drops, unhealthy living environment, drugs, and gays, lesbian, bisexual and transgender. The will to survive on the streets for these youth is for them to find shelter, food, clothes and money. Some would say that they have minds of their own, and are able to do the right thing when it comes to being homeless. However, how is it possible for them to do what’s right when they don’t have the support that homeless adult has. How can society expect them to survive of the street without an education, shelter, food, money, clothes, or better yet support from facilities that claim to be there for them.
Gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (GLBT) youth has it a little harder, because of their sexuality on top of being homeless. These young people are willing to have sex with anyone for food, clothes, shelter, money and or drugs. Also, they are the leading group of homeless youth that are sexually assaulted, discriminated, and victimized for being different and homeless. Society doesn’t point out the fact that the percentage of youth homelessness is higher with GLBT. The numbers are off the scale, some don’t know that 20 to 40 percent of homeless youth are gays and transgender compared to 5 to 10 percent of the youth population (American progress, 2010).
