In this selection by Richard Rodriquez he revels his dysfunctional family who is set apart by wealth. He feels reluctant of his family for replacing love with money. Through stellar diction along with remarkable phrases , amazing character, and great tone. Rodriquez shows emptiness toward his family since his mother separated their love. He feels their more obligated to receive presents then to give warm affection.
Rodriquez shows extreme sorrow toward his family with professional word choices and elaborate phrases. The author uses great understandable words to bring out a feeling of sadness and remorse. He then uses statements and phrases to make his point clear and sturdy. This is especially true during the first paragraph of the selection, were the author leads readers from the past to the present , what his mother did to ensure their rich fate. The rich and success meets the true sadness when Rodriquez states” looking into the dark where expensive foreign cars idle sharply. She seems, all of a sudden, very small. She looks worried.” Shows the reader how the mother sees what she wanted but doesn’t feel it, this is shown by great use of vocabulary. When the author says “the talk grows listless “ he shows how even a family cannot come up with conversation on Christmas because of their differences, shows great use of words to state the uncomfortably mood of this dying family. These two sentences shows how the author uses great visual aid and word choices to portray this loveless family. Rodriquez creates a great selection by using powerful diction, and significant phrases.
The author provides the reader with marvelous characters to set the piece in action. Rodriquez creates essentially every character needed to show this remote family. Every character is important chiefly the mother, who in essence created this monster the family has become, with her demand of success and wealth.
