Character Analysis
The main character of Fight Club is a lot more different than many books. In fact, the main character has a split personality, who is a normal guy when he is awake; he has a normal job, and a normal boring life. On the other hand, when he falls asleep, he becomes a whole new person named Tyler Durden. Tyler is essentially the main character, but this is the other side of the main character. Tyler is the person who the main character desires to be, a strong, authoritative, fearless and radical person.
There is little data about Tyler, but I can infer that Tyler is probably around the ages around 18-26. Tyler holds multiple night jobs and he loves to create chaos to clients and to companies. Some examples are how he spliced porn into movie because he worked as a movie projectionist or how he peed into the perfume of a rich woman when he was working as a waiter at a party. Tyler lives on Paper Street and lives in a house that is on the edge of breaking down. He didn’t know his father, and I think Tyler said once that he was fighting against his father. I believe Tyler was trying to say is that he wants to forget about him. There was no sufficient data about Tyler’s mother, or if he even had a mother since she was never mentioned in the book.
Since Tyler didn’t have a fatherly figure or a mother when he was younger, Tyler had to be strong on his own. Some examples are how Tyler eventually gets beat up for causing a ruckus at a formal party. He does not even throw one punch back. In the book he states how he has nothing to lose and that he is nothing but a piece of trash. Later in the book, Tyler created Project Mayhem. Project Mayhem was groups of people assigned to different parts of Project Mayhem, such as Arson, Assault, Mischief and Misinformation. The whole point of Project Mayhem was to show that any man, including himself, had the power to control history.
