It was a beautiful breezy Tuesday morning; I finished showering and getting ready to go to school. I left the house and jumped into my green 4x4 Toyota pickup. Turning the small black key the truck roared to life. Backing down the driveway and turning down the street I headed to school. Flipping through the stations not paying much attention none seemed to have any music on, just a lot of talking. I dropped in one of my favorite CD’s and continued my short drive to school. Arriving at the parking lot, I parked my truck and walked inside. All seemed very normal and I continued to up the white stairs to Civics class.
Every morning in Civics class we would always watch the news and discus. The walls in the classroom were covered with snippets of news articles and collages that students had created. Mr. Kline a thin well kept middle aged man promptly turned on the television set to CNN news. It was almost 8:00am, people were still slowly filing into class. Up on the television set there was an image of a building with smoke pouring out, it was the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York. Mr. Kline piped in and told everyone to be quiet and listen to the news. As we watched the screen in awe people were talking about what may have happened. Was it a terrible accident? From across the room someone shouted “It’s a terrorist attack!” and smiled afterwards. This individual couldn’t have been more right with the comment he had made. Minutes later we hear the reporter on the TV shouting “Here comes another plane!” On live TV we all watched the loss of life in a burst of flames as another plane smashed into the south tower.
The room was silent, no one was saying anything at all. We were all just looking up at the TV screen. Mr. Kline taught us a lot about politics and the world, but when he slowly turned his head from the TV to the class and simply stated “You will never forget where you were at this day.” I knew at this moment that things were never going to...
