A Dirty Place

arthur millers `a view from the bridge` is an extremly dramatic high tense play beased in the tought italian slums of red hook brooklyn witch is a dirty place dominated mostly by illegal immigrants from Italy. It is a poor, place where
crime is rife and gangsters and the Mafia are well known. The story portrays the trials and tribulations of many acient greek tradegies. The play is
about an Italian family, the Carbones and centres around Eddie Carbone
in particular. He lives in a small apartment with his wife Beatrice
and her niece Catherine who they both treat as a daughter. Eddie has a lot of conflict with all the characters at some point during the play. He deliberately starts arguments, for example, he questions the loyalty of the wives of Italian immigrants, " I betcha there's plenty of surprises sometimes when those guys get back there heh?" This is eddies idea of a joke but also he is trying to put marco to shame and embarris him. Eddies' jokes are unfair and out of order. Eddie also has conflict with himself as he tries to come to terms with his love for Catherine and the fact that she is growing up and will have relationships and most probably move out of the house. We see how the other characters feel anxious and weary around him. There is a feeling of unease as we see how Catherine and Beatrice are not sure about how he will react when he is told about Catherine's job as a stenographer. Beatrice thinks very carefully about how to persuade him to let Catherine start work "Eddie please - she's crazy to start work." Eddie also has physical and verbal conflict with Rodolpho as well as Marco.
