I always loved Miss Emily, and believe it or not, she loved me too. We had a secret romance, seeing how it would be unconventional for her to be with a colored man. That’s why two murders had to take place. Yes, I said two murders.
Mr. Grierson was the first that had to go. I can still remember the look of shock and hatred on his face when he found out about me and Emily. He tried to kill me. What was I supposed to do? Nobody would keep me from the love of my life. It was hard on Em at first, but I persuaded her that it was for the best. After a few days she was fine, and we could show our affection openly within the house.
Then along cameHomer Barron, the Yankee. Homer was a day laborer with a big secret. He was actually a very wealthy man that owned the construction company that everyone thought he just worked for. So when he started showing some interest in my Emily, I started thinking. See, Em and I didn’t have very much money and we wanted to move to a more deserted area so we didn’t have to hide our love as much. Therefore, Em and I sat down and created a plan.
Emily was going to marry Homer. After the ceremony, Homer was going to mysteriously die before he could put his filthy hands on her. Then, all of his “unknown” money was going to be ours. We could finally have the life we always wanted. We left the town hints that Em was going to marry Homer. Buying night clothes and the toilet set seemed to be obvious enough. Our perfect plan was taking place and we though nothing could stop us. Then things turned sour.
The night Homer was trying on his wedding attire was the night his life would end. Em and I were in my room having some alone time. We thought Homer had fallen asleep in his room. We never even heard him open the door. He was shocked at what he saw, but surprisingly calm. Em and I knew that he would never marry her now, and he would probably tell the whole town what happened.
