In the reading "Reentry and Reintegration: Challenges faced by the families of sex offenders," some interesting dynamics are discussed. When we look at the goals of the CJ system, reintegration and rehabilitation are listed as part of what our system hopes to achieve. Granted that not every goal can be prioritized to the same extent for every individual, but when we look at the case of convicted individuals being released back into society, these two goals should be the priority. If they are not, we are simply releasing the same person we took into the system back into society. With all that being said, sex offenders are a much different type of criminal. The stigma and restrictions attached to registered sex offenders is generally more than that of any other convicted criminal. Not to alarm anyone, but there is a chance that one of your neighbors could be a convicted murder, bank robber, or drug dealer and the system does not require any type of public notification.
What are your thoughts on the topics covered in this article? Are we stacking the deck against sex offenders who have served their time, or are we being to lenient on other violent criminals who may pose just as great a threat to the public?
