The Industrial Revolution completely altered life in the western world. These alterations and changes of the society, economy, and politics came from England’s Industrial Revolution. England was the first country to become an Industrial Nation. The change was not just significant inventions, but as Harold Perkin said “ The Industrial Revolution was no mere sequence of changes in Industrial Techniques and production, but a social revolution with social cause as well as profound social effects” (Perkin 1969).
The social changes from the Industrial Revolution could be said to have made the European working class. The Inventions altered the working class dramatically. For example, the cotton gin sped up the process so much and needed less people. Since the cotton gin could produce so much more and was much more profitable now, the owners needed more cotton then ever before to keep up with the demand. Slavery was used to gather more cotton. Another example of the social change is the standard of living increased. From the developing technologies, life itself became easer for the everyday person. Human happiness, improved morality, and increase in knowledge for a wide range of people, not just the wealthy. With such an increase in Industries, England called themselves the “Workshop of the World”.
Also, the Industrial Revolution changed the economy in many significant ways. For example, the inventions created an increase in trading. With an increase of trading, the shipping methods had to be improved. The steam train played an important role in the shipping of goods from the ports into the urban areas. Steam trains, instead of horse and buggy, was a much more efficient way to send goods across land. The problem with shipping goods is that they go bad after a period of time. The steam train solved that problem by cutting the time down an incredible amount. Since the farmers of England were said to be the best farmers, there was an increase in production of food...
