What are dreams? Are they the product of an overactive imagination, or could our dreams be something more? Could the dreams we have at night be an insight to the future? Then again, dreams, simply, could be a situation that our subconscious derives in our sleep.
In a dream, one can go anywhere, be anyone, and do anything. When a person dreams, they cannot control where their dreams take them; they are like a passengers on a voyage who have no knowledge of where they are going or when they might get there. They have no control of their actions or surroundings. The mind, more or less, takes over. Sometimes, dreams can be comprehended in the context of repressed thoughts. Dreams can serve as a channel for the thoughts and desires one keeps contained during the day. When sleeping we allow ourselves to behave in ways that, in our mind, are unacceptable in our day to day life. For example, if a person is extremely responsible, they will perhaps dream of doing something boisterous and completely out of character for them. The feelings that we keep suppressed throughout our day need to be released at some point. If someone is a generally happy person, their dreams are more likely to have emotions such as anger and sadness, because they are the emotions that the person does not express. Not only do dreams bring out our suppressed feelings but they also occasionally bring out our deeper feelings, such as fear or apprehension of something that on a conscious level we do not even apprehend. For instance, a person who dreams of falling may have feelings of insecurity, inability, and/or anxiety, about something in their life. Perhaps they feel as if they have no control in their job or relationships. Falling can also indicate a feeling of failure or inadequacy. These feelings steal into our dreams because they are not recognized in our waking life.
