U.S FEDERAL BUDGET

In 2007, the federal government's spending rose to an astounding $2.8 trillion-- the equivalent of $22,000 per household. Growth in federal government spending, however, rarely translates into better services for the American people. In fact, the federal government loses billions of dollars every year due to ineffective programs, poor management, waste, and fraud. And, the problem is getting worse. Within the next five years, federal spending is expected to reach more than $3.2 trillion. Moreover, federal spending continues to grow at incredible rates. This rate of growth in federal spending is not sustainable and must be brought under control. Like many in this country, I have trusted our government and therefore never questioned the destination of all this money. In fact, I have strongly encouraged more government spending especially during periods of economic recession, and I used to think that the more government spending meant better services available for the American people. However, after all the problems in the stock and mortgage market which has incredibly hurt our economy and the lives of many U.S citizens. It makes me wonder whether all this money has been properly handled and where it has been distributed.

According to the office of Management and Budget, the federal budget is distributed among numerous departments, agencies and government services. They range from agriculture to health related departments; or from veterans affairs agencies to the aeronautics and space administration (NASA). However, I will only focus on 5 departments such as National Defense, Education, Health and Human services, Justice, and Social Security. After gathering the data into the table presented in this data project, we could clearly see the different proportions between the agencies. Although it is understandable why some departments might get more funding than others; I never expected the allocation to be so uneven....
