‘A belief in miracles leads to the concept of a God who favours some but not all of his creation’ Discuss. (35 marks)

The word miracle can be defined in a variety of ways. Some may consider it to be a sign of God’s presence within the world and his dynamic power, with other believing that a miracle is an event that lacks an explanation, whilst others can believe a miracle simply breaks the laws of nature. This therefore leads onto the constant questioning of if God does perform miracles and they are not a violation of the laws of nature, why does God only perform them on certain people. Does God favour who to perform a miracle on and who not to?
For Christians, there are continuous examples within the Bible that illustrate God’s activity within the world, mainly Jesus’ miracles. The Bible, for Christians, clearly depicts events that are direct examples of God intervening in history, using his power, and causing certain events to happen. Christians would argue that this is not saying that God violated the laws of nature, as during Biblical times, particularly those in the Jewish Scriptures, come from a culture lacking any idea regarding nature. This idea is clearly affirmed by Peter Mullen, who writes in his novel Thinking About Religion “Their true value is that they serve to convince us that God is in charge of the world, that he is lord of nature and of history”. Ultimately arguing that God does not favourite who to perform a miracle on, or violate the laws of nature, as a Lord and a God is beyond human comprehension. Although there is evidence in the Christian holy scripture of miracles being performed, there is a lack of them being performed in the modern era. Some could suggest that God performs miracles arbitrarily, in a rational manner which can lead on to argue God does favour some of his creation. To highlight the 2004 tsunami, thousands of people died, however many people survived. A question many would ask, why those specific few, why not everyone...
