Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States of America, his term lasting from 1860 to 1865. Lincoln came from humble upbringings, to becoming the most powerful man in America, Thomas (2008) stated that "Honest Abe, as he was most commonly called, is known today as a great and influential person whose message echoes in American politics as well as American ethics.” (p. 86) Lincoln has almost always been voted the best, or one of the best Presidents this country has ever had. Not only did he help bring an end to slavery, he also helped mend the war torn feelings between the Union and the Confederacy after the conclusion of the Civil War. He was responsible for reuniting and reconstructing America, and leading the way for his successors to turn this amazing country into the powerhouse it is today. From his log cabin he was raised in during his childhood, to his tragic and untimely death. Abraham Lincoln was a great man whose legend still lives on strong in this day and age.
Abraham was born on February 12, 1809, in a small log cabin at a place called Sinking Springs Farm in rural Kentucky, to Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. (2009 Lincoln Pennies 1) He had had two siblings an older sister Sarah and a younger brother named Thomas, who died in infancy. On the farm that Abraham Lincoln was born on, the family only lived there for two years, before moving, to a farm ten miles away, located in Knob Creek. This is where Sarah and Abraham first went to school, learning basic elementary education such as reading; writing, and arithmetic in a log schoolhouse. The amazing thing is that Abraham had less than one year of formal schooling, the bulk of his knowledge came from being self-educated, and he even went to the extent of making his own textbooks.
