There come points in one’s life where they must make a decision or do something that will impact them for the rest of their life. The choice for an adopted child to meet their biological parents, while in the past it has not been as prevalent, has risen with the increase in foster children admitted into the system and the increase in divorce rates. The process of meeting ones biological parents takes them through a few of what I would call “stages”. These stages are, establishing contact, arranging a meeting.

First, one must establish contact. This can be done by contacting the DFS or by simply asking the legal parents for the contact information. This stage is arguably the most difficult and nerve wracking of the three. For one to live a large portion of their life being raised by a couple whom they call mom and dad and then deciding to meet face to face with the woman who actually gave birth to them. Something like that has the potential to make just about any person nervous as all get out.
Then, once contact has been established one should arrange a meeting. It is often a good idea to arrange the meeting so as to limit the level of nervousness. For example inviting them to one’s high school or college graduation party. This way they can introduce their biological parents to their adopted family and friends in a friendly and fun filled setting.
