How I Came to Canada
Hi, my name is Oleg Paliy. I am currently a Canadian citizen livening in Canada. I wasn’t always Canadian though (you probably know that based off of my name). I was Ukrainian. While living the rest of my life in Canada a lot people from the large cites have asked me why I came to Canada, what my old life was like and what is my life like now. Well this isn’t a simple question I can answer with just a few words so I’ve written my life story, down on these pages, in a simplified version.
My life stared out as me on farm. I had 6 brothers and 4 sisters as well as my as parents. During this period I was 6 years old being one of the middle kids. My life here started off pretty rough because my parents didn’t make enough income. We just barley scarped by with empty stomachs and sore muscles (we had to work “a lot” on the farm). Well my life wasn’t that bad because, I had a roof over my head and a caring family, and that was all that matter.
As I got older my dad started teaching me about being a doctor. He once had high hopes of becoming a doctor himself he, but couldn’t afford taking that life style. He actually knew quit a lot about health and was able to teach me all he knew. Besides that, not much ever happened.
Up to this point was about my childhood, but by now I was to choose a woman to be my wife. Once again, not having enough money, I was unable to leave the farm, but I was able to- and did- marry who is now my wife, Anna. Living together on the family farm we ended up having 4 children of own to help out.
Now this next part of my story is how I learned about Canada. It was around the late 1800’s when the flyers stated coming out about Canada. Having been told about this by the town’s folk, we heard that this British Colony was offering “free” land. To this, my older siblings jumped the boat and headed for this grand opportunity.
