American Civil Society
“Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?” This is the question we as high school students should have asked our teachers. A student goes through their school years thinking that they are getting the best education possible preparing them for college. But we come together at a university and realize that the world isn’t really painted out the way that they made it seem. We aren’t really a civil society, but an assembly of pawns living together as a whole yet it’s every man for himself. Students are taught to make a change and take a stand for the good of society. But, how are we supposed to do that when what’s beneath the surface are lies and cover ups?
Take the Sean Bell case for instance. Police pumped out 50 shots towards his vehicle when there was no gun found in the vehicle or pulled out towards the police. Were so many shots needed to be fired? I doubt it. Unfortunately, this is not the first Sean Bell case we hear of and it probably won’t be the last. The law and justice are not always administered correctly. I used to think that the leaders of this country were just and upright in their ways and there were a few bad apples in the bunch that made the leaders take serious action towards their behavior. We seem to feel like they are a different breed of human. Then we come to learn that the leaders are just as human as any other and don’t always use the authority of their power for the good of the people. Rosa Parks is another example of injustice and false accusation. Where was the brotherly love when she was arrested for sitting in her section of the bus? I should have found out the real story back in secondary school. Maybe that is why teachers only make students do research papers on subjects that can’t be questioned in too much depth. I remember being told where to go to get information for such papers. I actually don’t remember doing any papers at all for history classes....
