Animal Farm

Animal Farm

“Power tends to corrupt, absolute power corrupts absolutely”. These famous words were spoken by Lord Acton himself. The importance of this quote is to explain that people who have power abuse it, and if they have total control, then that power consumes them. Political figures are hypocrites and they tend to abuse power and have power control them.
The main theme of animal farm is corruption. It is a very important theme because corruption is everywhere. Whether it’s corrupted with money, or power, corruption is inside everyone. Whether it controls them completely, depends on the person. In the story, Napoleon was the animals’ leader and he abused power by creating laws and not following them. Political figures often abuse power also and they may try to be sneaky about it just like the cats in the book.
“The only thing to fear is fear itself.” FDR is right. When people become corrupted, they tend to act upon their instincts and do whatever they can to survive. Take Rod Blagojevich for example. He was the governor of Illinois. Since he had such a powerful position in our country, he abused his power by trying to sell a senate seat. That comes to show you that people are desperate and will do anything to get what they need to survive. In this case, Rod was willing to risk his job! He did and it cost him his job.
A corrupted government cannot fully function, whereas a non corrupted government is able to be depended on by the citizens. Power drives people mad, and sadly, it is what turns one another against each other. United States is a powerful nation! Do we want to show the world how disorganized our government is due to political corruption? We are better than that! Orwell specifically chose to write this book to have the reader take in the fact that corruption is what makes a nation crumble. He didn’t just decide one day to write a book about animals and not have a whole purpose. Corruption kills.
