Childhood development is our basic foundation for the people we become. Sigmund Freud believed all of our traits as human beings is derived from the events that happened to us as children, and that it was direct set up to our future pains and pleasures. Traditionally, a child is raised by two parents- a man, and a woman. In this century, same-sex couples are able to adopt and raise children despite controversial marriage laws between the parents. Much of America has divided itself and declared a strong stance on being for or against same-sex marriage. One of the driving reasons to support gay parents is that “it is better for a child to be raised by two loving parents, regardless of gender, than to be brought up in a broken home.”. What about the comparison between children brought up in unbroken homes? A fully functional traditional family, and fully loving same-sex parents. The question I am faced with, is how different is the outcome? To what standards does one qualify as being “better” than the other or even “good”. If growing up under a same-sex couple is really that different, is it still beneficial to the child? As a young woman who wishes to be a mother in the future, this topic is very important to me because I want to make sure my child will grow up in a loving, functional environment, despite whether or not my significant other is male or female. I want my child to grow up in a world of acceptance, from whatever her upbringing may be.
