Levels of Critical Thinking – e.g. Evaluate the Social Identity Theory
Level 1 – no critical thinking present at all e.g. The social identity theory was presented by Taijfel. He proposed that there are 3 levels to the SIT…

Level 2 – limited critical thinking present e.g. A strength of the S.I.T is that it is useful and easily applied as can be used to help understand group behaviours.
P – Point “A strength of the SIT is that it is useful and can be used to apply to behaviours displayed in different groups and explain the formation of prejudice and discrimination”.
E – Evidence “As seen in the Taijfel study…groups of boys had to allocate points to wither their team or another. It was evident that the children preferred to award their own team over another

Level 3 – Full critical thinking e.g.
P – Point “A strength of the SIT is that it is useful and can be used to apply to behaviours displayed in different groups and explain the formation of prejudice and discrimination”.
E – Explain “Being able to use this theory to explain prejudice and discrimination allows us to understand how and why people discriminate and therefore how we can minimise this”.
E – Evidence “As seen in the Taijfel study…groups of boys had to allocate points to wither their team or another. It was evident that the children preferred to award their own team over another. This was due to the idea that the boys felt more connected and identified more with their own group that the other”.
L – Link “Through the work of Taijfel it is evident that the boys discriminated against the ‘outgroup’ and favoured their ‘ingroup’. The Social Identity Theory allows us to see that if we identify with our group we are more likely to favour them and discriminate against another group”.
D – Develop “however, it must also be noted that Taijfels study was only conducted on boys and therefore limits the powers of...
