What arts are there besides visual art? How are they related?
When most people think of art, they immediately assume one is referring to paintings, drawings, or sculptures. While the visual arts are certainly a popular form of art, it is important to remember that art comes in a variety of forms. Some other types of art include the applied arts, performing arts, plastic arts, and decorative arts. This essay will explore the different types of arts and how they are all related.
The visual arts include things such as drawing, painting, and sculpture-all of which are forms of the fine arts, as well. In addition, contemporary forms of art such as photography, video and animation, and collage can be found in this category. According to Bhuyan, applied art is a component of the visual arts “that has practical application as well as functionality”. Examples of applied art include fashion and jewelry design, wood crafts, interior design, and architecture. Yet another form of art is the performing arts, which include dance, music, singing, and film and theater. Contrary to its’ name, the plastic arts do not refer exclusively to materials made out of plastic. However, it can be defined as any three-dimensional work that can be molded, shaped, or changed such as clay, stone, plaster, and even paper. Finally, the decorative arts include mosaics, ceramics, stained glass, and tapestry.
Different forms of art are actually not all that different in their purpose. Bhuyan states that the purpose of art is to “express our emotions, intellect, and ideas”. Every artist, whether they are a painter, a dancer, an architect, or a ceramist produces their specific art form as a creative outlet. Art is a means of communication which displays the artists’ feelings in a way that, otherwise, would be left unknown to others.
