Michael Turner MWH Period 10 April 7th, 2009 Chapter 1-13 Questions Chapter 1 Okonkwo’s father Unoka, had the characteristics of borrowing and losing money, and he disliked the sight of blood. These affected Okonkwo very strongly. I believe that Achebe describes the ritual for sharing kola without explaining it because he wants the audience to feel as if they are already apart of the Ibo culture instead of having everything explained like an outsider. Chapter 2 Okonkwo overcompensates for his father’s weaknesses by being very demanding of the people around him (family). He seems to always be on his son, Nwoye, for being lazy. He also beats him. Okonkwo finds women, as well as his father to be weak. Chapter 3 Okonkwo reacts to the “worst year in living memory” very well, because he feels that because he survived such a bad time he can continue to survive throughout much more. The experience was proof of his fortitude and mental toughness. Share-cropping is a system of agriculture or agricultural production in which a landowner allows a tenant to use the land in return for a share of the crop produced on the land. Chapter 4 Okonkwo committed the crime of beating his wife, for not cooking dinner, during the Week of Peace. Okonkwo is very fond of Ikemefuna, but he does not show any affection because he finds it to be a sign of weakness, which he refuses to tolerate in himself or others. Ikemefuna eventually calls Okonkwo “father.” Chapter 5 Okonkwo does not enjoy feasts because he believes them to be time of idleness. I believe women have to sit with their legs together because it can be found inappropriate to sit in such a way.
