Have you ever wonder how much money is made from the lottery? Or how much Alabama could benefit from having a lottery? In this essay I will answer these questions and more by presenting the pros for Alabama to create and successfully use the money to benefit Alabamians of all ages, from helping the youth of Alabama including Pre-K youths to high school seniors, helping out the communities’ leaders, and helping out the community in general.
Most states hid their earnings from the general public, but I have found that the southern states (Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee) that have a lottery that’s banking in a tremendous amount of $90 billion respectively per year. Also, with only 20% of every unclaimed winning ticket going back into the lottery pool, that’s a lot of money that can be used to help the citizens of Alabama. Imagine if Alabama had a lottery pool of $350 million and it doesn’t get claimed. That’s only $70 million going back into the pool leaving $280 million to be used at the state control, following the plan written into law of course.
First and foremost, if Alabama choose to get a lottery, a plan should be written into law earmarking that the money be used for improvements for Alabama. Now there are numerous ways that the money can be used for. For example, Alabama could adopt Georgia’s plan of having $200 million going toward education in the state. That’s including a Pre-K program aimed at getting four and five year olds ready for kindergarten, also they have a scholarship program set for high school seniors stating that if they finish high school with a B or better they could go to any publicly funded college in the state of Georgia for free. Also, if the plan is thoughtfully written out, each county would see a certain amount of the lottery money.
