What is “tourism”? Who is a “tourist”? Describe the four basic types of tourist. Tourism Tourism is an industry which involves people going to places where they don’t live or work for relaxation. Tourism is a tertiary industry. Tourism first started in the 1720’s for sick rich people. But because of the agreeable climate and natural beauty of the Bahama Islands they started playing sick. Even though it was not really an industry and there were no hotels, restaurants, etc. it was a humble start. Tourism really turned into an industry during the American Civil War which lasted from 1861 to 1865.Since the Bahamas was used as a trans-shipment point many people came to Nassau. This meant that there would be various jobs for the Bahamian population. Even though this only lasted for 4 years we learned about the potential of the tourism industry. The next big development of the tourism industry was Prohibition when a lot of smugglers came to the Bahamas to buy alcohol. Americans also came for a vacation because of our legal alcohol. Also there were some inventions that helped the tourism industry and they are the airplane, steam/diesel ships and the railway system. So as you can see the tourism is a great industry. Who is a ‘tourist?’ A tourist is someone who goes to another destination either to visit relatives or to go on a vacation. They can stay for less than 24 hours but not for over a year. Wherever they go they usually spend money on accommodations, food or entertainment. 4 Types of tourists There are 4 basic types of these are stopover, cruise, day, and transit tourists. Stopover tourist A stopover tourist is someone who stays for over 24 hours. These tourists are the most important because they make a lot of jobs for the Bahamian population either directly or indirectly.
