Book Review: The Virtues of Aging
Former president Jimmy Carter was a man who is down to earth himself. For this reason, he wrote the book that can relate to basically all readers because we all grow and we all go through the process of aging. In the book The Virtues of Aging by Jimmy Carter, as a former president of the United States, he modestly described his experiences of aging just as any other regular citizens would have been through. There were not any extravagant activities; most of them were simply just fishing, mountain climbing skiing, tennis, writing books, etc. The author and his wife, Rosalynn, experienced together on the chapter eight just as any of us would find those simple moments are the moments that we get to enjoy our lives when (Carter 68). This gave me the ideas that these are the fun that life can give human as I grow.
“Virtue” is a very descriptive world to describe the process of aging. Just as any other readers, I would wonder how the former President Jimmy Carter found “virtues” in aging. As a result, this book title led me to become interest in this book as I wanted to find out what is his virtues and why is it make his book become one of the New York time best-seller list. The theme of the book is beauty exists within the wonders of aging. For instance, one of the wise messages that I found was, “We seem to be bound together with ever-increasing bonds as we’ve grown older and need each other more” (Carter 39). As a young person, I always thought as a marriage grow through time, the attractions between the spouses would be fading away since they know each other so well to even become interest with one another. However, the author explained his idea by stating older people shared the “golden year” in order to experience as much opportunities such as excitement, adventure, and pleasure as possible.
