Social Policy Decisions Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
Candy Lighter, the mother of Cari Lighter who was killed by a drunk driver created Mother Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in 1980. MADD was once know as Mothers Against Drunk Drivers but was later changed to Mothers Against Drunk Driving in 1984; it was changed because MADD is against the criminal act of drunk driving, not against individuals. MADD has played a huge role the education of drunk driving to the public. “That hard work, coupled with greater enforcement and harsher penalties in the 1980s, resulted in a decrease in alcohol-related traffic fatalities by nearly 50 percent. Drunk driving went from being socially accepted to stigmatized and unacceptable” ("The New Prohibition").
MADD’s overall mission reads, “Mothers Against Drunk Driving mobilizes victims and their allies to establish the public conviction that impaired driving is unacceptable and criminal, in order to promote corresponding public policies, programs and personal responsibility" ("MADD - Mission Statement"). Drunk driving is defiantly a huge social problem and MADD made their goal to improve the statistics. Many people can be affected by drunk driving, from the person that is driving drunk to the all the people that can be involved, such as police officers, medical personal, family and friends. Now if there is a casualty due to the drunk driving, that can affect many more people, people in the victim’s life can be affected severely.
With the creation and progress of MADD there has come a deal of changes in policies and laws. Although it was viewed as a novelty and it was expected to not really have the impact that it did, MADD has developed to be one of the United States most powerful and inspirational alcohol related organizations.
