9/11 Attacks Effects: Iraq War, Homeland Security, Airports
September 11, 2001, at 8:46AM, theUnited Stateswas awakened by the cruel reality of the world. The terrorist group Al-Qaeda hijacked American Airlines Flight 11, American Airlines Flight 77 and United Airlines Flight 93 over the course of an hour and a half (Elsis). TheUnited Stateswas under attack, and the world didn’t even know until the first plane hit theNorthTowerthat morning. These attacks devastated the citizens of our country and created fear and uncertainty in the government. Four hundred and three heroes were lost that day trying to save citizens of America, and 3,051 children lost a parent that day who was a hero to them as well (“September 11 by Numbers”). It also made our nation stronger, and more determined to prevent it from happening again.
After September 11, 2001 The President of The United States, George W. Bush declared a ‘War on Terror’ and said that it would start with al-Qaeda but not end there. Osama Bin Laden was a prime target for our counter terrorism efforts. Bin Laden was the head of operations of the terrorist group, and in the 1990’s was targeted after he bombed many U.S. Embassies. These former operations against Osama were part of Operation Infinite Reach led by former President Bill Clinton (Pike, John). We have been after Osama for over 20 years and he was finally killed on May 1st, 2011. After 9/11 President Bush sent troops into Iraq, ruled by the evil dictator Saddam Hussein. He killed or tortured whoever interfered with his plans of complete domination of the country. The reason we invaded Iraq was that we believed they had created chemical or nuclear weapons and we needed to stop them before they became too strong and attacked the United States.
