City of Georgetown’s Proposition 1

Proposition 1 in the City of Georgetown is to grant a bond using 46 million dollars for road and street construction. This proposition includes the widening of Berry Creek drive to Airport road; DB Wood road, FM 971 and FM 1460.Also in proposition are two projects to study new routes connecting current roads to Toll 130.

Fm 1460 is a small Farm to market road that was barely driven on 10 years ago. The slow development of southeast Georgetown and northeast Round Rock has justified minor road improvements and widening the road between the undeveloped land between the to cities. A new proposition is up for widening all parts of 1460FM within Georgetown‘s city limits. As a taxpayer for the city, I strongly disagree with a motion to using city funds to widen this road.

I live at the northern end of FM 1460, one of the areas that will be widen should the proposition pass. My neighbors and I strongly agree that widening the road will only increase traffic flow to an area that is know for speeding through town to town. Many drivers use this road to get to the Shopping centers, Restaurants, to the Movies and to get away from a congested IH35. Much of this land between the two cities is undeveloped. There is nothing in between them to slow traffic down but a single red light for a stretch of 5 miles.

As a taxpayer, I would like my taxes to be allocated to a much more useful purpose. There are many road improvements needed in the city’s high traffic areas where more work could be perform for less money. These roads do not need the extra cost of developing new parts of the roads and could be resurfaced to improve the overall quality of the road. Many areas like South Austin Avenue, which has just completed resurfacing. I drive this road everyday and enjoy the fact that our current roads are being taken care of and not wasting money on ideas for new roads and leaving current roads unrepaired.
