Assignment # 3 Civil Right Movement
After studying the Civil Right Movement of Native Americans, African American and Mexican American, I believe that these civil rights movements effected the dominant group’s social perceptions of minority groups in America. For example, dominant groups in Congress have passed many laws to support or recognize the rights of minority groups in America. As we can see today, the Native American practices their cultural as the same time with the American cultural. It doesn’t matter whether they live in reservation or not because they have a right to practice their original culture and learn English, too. Those things proved that how the dominant group’s social perceptions change. It’s not mean that the government should return the land for the Native American because it will create another war. In the other hands, the Native American still have the support from dominant groups in social power, such as many scholarship for student who are Native American. In addition, not only Native American has that development, African American and Mexican American gradually gets the full right that they desire. If we go back in the past which before the civil right movement, we could see the segregation and discrimination exist in the American society between Black and White and Latinos. However after the Civil Right Movement and until now, these is no such of things may happen. It is the proof to make me believe that the dominant group’s social perceptions of minority groups in America changed after Civil Right Movement.
In the other hands, I believe Civil Right Movements affected minority groups’ social perceptions of themselves. If we turn the clock back in time, we could see the different life of minority groups in America. They were treated unfairly by dominant groups.
