Compare and Contrast: Personality Theories

The two theories that I decided to compare and contrast with one another is the Humanistic theory and the Trait theory. First, I will start with the comparison of the Humanistic,and Trait theories. I will have to say that the comparison that I interpreted for these were that the two theories do state that one’s personality or behavior is made up by the choices that they make. Both of these two theories do look at one’s personality or behavior as one unit of the individual. That is the only comparisons that I understood to be between these two theories.
Now, I will explain the contrasts that I believe to be between the Humanistic and Trait theory. I think that I will start with the Trait theory first. This theory looks at ones behavior. The Trait theorylooks at one’s behavior or personality through five different stages. These stages are better known as the “Five-factor model”. These stages are agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, extraversion, and neuroticism. I believe that the Trait theory is a theory that is descriptive. This theory only looks at the behavior of the individual, and does not even try to explain it. The Trait theory also explains that the individuals genetics and their own culture which they live is the tremendously huge impact it has on their behavior.
I will turn my attention to the contrasts of the Humanistic theory. This theory looks at the individuals behavior or personality as an actual individual. This theory understands that individuals are unique in their own ways, so that is one reason this theory looks at individuals behavior or personality through a completely different light, through someone else’s eyes. The Humanistic theory focuses more on the meaning of life. This theory comes from the existentialist philosophy, which translates into that life is determined by choice, and not by fate.
