I personally enjoyed what Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, Jersey, had to say of the class of 2013 at Yale University. As he started off, from what I heard, “First class is about the content of your character, the quality of your ideas, the kindness that you have in your heart. This is first class.” This caught my attention because life is not like a united airlines, we as people are all on the same plane. We will all either go up, or go down together. If we have a spectacular failure, we should have it notified or documented to let us remember the past, and encourages us to have an even spectacular future. He says, “It’s not just about us. If the story tells us anything, it is the African proverb right there that if we want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together.”
He, Cory Booker, was on a mission. As mayor, he did his duties. Every time there was a shooting no matter what time it was, he was there. Almost like a preacher, ministering to them saying that what are happening are not them. That is not how they are. There was this boy who resemblance his father, has been shot and died. It was amazing how the building of the funeral was packed for his death, everyone was there, but no one was there for his life! We, the people, will have days like this; waking up with sorrow weighing down on our shoulders. We will all have that little voice that tells us to get up, don’t give up, and keep on going.
Love is not a destination; however, it is the way of being. Gandhi once stated, “Whoever finds that sandal, wouldn’t it be great if they found two as well?” We have so much potential. The most common way people give up their power is by not realizing they have it in the first place. Days go slowly, but the years fly by.
