Revenge is Second Best to Love
Abigail was in love with John Proctor, but he was married. John told Abigail that they couldn’t be together. After John told her that, she wanted revenge, she wanted him to hurt just as much as she did. When she realized that she had the power to make his wife go away she did just that. She thought that if she could get rid of his wife that he would love her like she did him.
Abigail worked for the Proctor’s, while she worked for them her and John had an affair. Abigail had a grudge against John because he didn’t love her, and he didn’t want to be with her. Abigail had been caught doing witchcraft and was afraid that they would hang her, and her name would be ruined. When Abigail received information that if she confessed to seeing the devil, they would only make her confess her sins to God and be done with it. After Abigail “confessed to the devil possessing her”, the other girls caught on to what she was doing and acted along with her.
With Abigail doing this she help to create the witch trials, and she soon realized how much power and effect she had. All she had to do was reveal names of others who have practiced or acted in witchcraft. This is when Abigail gets the idea to accuse John’s wife, Elizabeth Proctor, of being involved in witchcraft so she could get rid of her and John would love her instead. Abigail thought that Elizabeth was the reason for John not truly loving her. She felt as if Elizabeth was in her way, and blocking her from being able to be with John.
When John and Abigail meet in the woods, he tells her that “say you are blind to spirits that you can not see them anymore, and she would never cry witchery again.” Abigail then went on trying to convince John that his wife sent spirits into Abigail’s room to bite her breast. Abigail went on to say that the whole town was filled of hypocrites and she is glad that she has the power to cleansed the town of them. Before John leaves the woods he...
