1. The main character in death be not proud is Johnny Gunther Jr. Johnny is a skinny, yet tall and handsome young man. He has bright, blue eyes and sunny, blonde hair. He is seventeen years old. Johnny is not a very athletic boy and is sometimes frustrated about it. However, he does play lacrosse and is an excellent swimmer. Johnny has a brilliant mind and he enjoys doing chemistry experiments. despite his brilliance, he is very unorganized, and he is a major procrastinator. He also has a bad habit of losing things. Johnny has a great amount of endurance. He goes through treatments of mustard gas, x-rays, operations and a difficult diet. Johnny also has a pleasant attitude toward everything.. No matter what he goes through, he is always cheerful and humorous. While he is sick, he hardly complains or cries. Johnny is always warm, kind, and generous to everyone, he believes that there is good in everyone, and he tries to find it. He is so obedient to his parents and he loves them so much. He always worries about how his parents are going to pay for all of the hospital bills, he also worries about his parent’s reaction to anything new in his illness. That shoes how much Johnny cares about his parents. Johnny is a very loved person. Many of his doctors care for him as if he were their own son, and they do their best to cure him. He also has may teachers from school that care about him. Johnny also has many friends from Deerfield Academy who come and visit him. Johnny was born in Paris, France on November 4, 1929. In the first few years of his life, he liven in Vienna, Austria and London England. His family moved to the United States when he was about seven years old. He went to several schools including Lincoln in New York City, New York, and Deerfield Academy in Deerfield Massachusetts. Johnny dies on June 30, 1947 after fifteen months of illness. If he were to have survived, he would have attended Harvard in the fall.
