The following day, July 1, two different groups of Confederates marched back to Gettysburg. They ran into Federal cavalry and the skirmish began. The battle would then quickly escalate. General Lee ordered to have 25,000 men come to the battle. The Union had just less than 20,000 with them.
After awhile of battling and shots fired, the federals were pushed back out to the edge of Gettysburg and forced to regroup outside of town.
By the second day, most of both armies had arrived at Gettysburg. Later in the afternoon of July 2, Lee ordered troops to carry out heavy assault against the Union soldiers, and fierce fighting was commonplace at places like Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and the Peach Orchard. Confederate demonstrations had quickly turned into full-scale assaults on Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill. Even with their heavy number of loss, death, and weakness, the Union Army and soldiers held their ground through the battle.
Lastly, the third day of battlebrought with it fighting which resumed on Culp's Hill. But the main event of that final day was a dramatic and quick assault by 12,500 Confederate soldiers against the core of the Union line. The charge was quickly put to sleep by heavy Union rifle and artillery fire, and the Confederate army suffered a large number of losses.
