The nature of discrimination today is quite different than the overt discrimination endured during the civil rights era but in reality it is very prevalent in today’s workplace. One would think with how diverse the United States is discrimination would be less prominent and cultural awareness would be stressed and taught before individuals entered into the workforce. Discrimination defined it as different treatment of others based solely on their membership in a socially distinct group or category, such as race, ethnicity, sex, religion, age, or disability it is usually based on prejudices instead of facts. When people think of discrimination there there’s usually a negative connotation attached to the definition but discrimination can be viewed as favorable such as an additional discount provided to senior citizens or higher insurance fees charged to younger drivers. Usually discrimination can be associated with stereotyping and prejudices. Stereotypes usually consist of inaccurate generalizations about a person or groups of persons. We usually develop stereotypes when we are unable to gather the appropriate information regarding a particular group so that a fair judgment can be made. Unfortunately, the society perpetuates stereotypes which eventually lead to unfair discrimination.
Why Do People Discriminate?
Why do people discriminate can be answered based on how people view one another. Our views of others make up how we perceive, socialize and categorized people of other cultural backgrounds. Many studies have been conducted to measure racial and ethnic stereotypes. A study conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, found that many American still harbor beliefs about racial and ethnic minorities based on racist stereotypes.
