Early Americans

Throughout the course of history many explorations have been made and with these explorations many significant findings have occurred. Some of the most important findings is that of new and unexplored land; land that may cause to benefit the finders in a great way if it is utilized correctly. With such findings came great thoughts and expectations, both negative and positive. One such historical event was the founding of the Americas by Christopher Columbus. His discovery lead to the beginning of colonization, by the Europeans, of America. That is when many people from all around Europe would travel over seas to this new land with hope to start a better and new life for themselves and their family. Well, at least that’s what the first group, those that followed and believed Christopher Columbus’s and other explorer’s views, hoped to achieve. While another group, the Puritans, did not have a choice on their voyage due to religious persecution.
The writings of Christopher Columbus and other early European explorers, like John Smith, began as “marketing” material for the “New World.” These writings spoke of a land, a natural paradise, abundant, fertile, and full of economic potential. Smith and Columbus both speak of the abundance of plant and animal, some of which they have never seen before. Smith established the “American Dream.” He wrote “If he have nothing but his hands, he may set up this trade and by industry quickly grow rich, spending but half that time well which in England we abuse idleness, worse or as ill.”(41). Within this quote he spoke of the economic potential of being bale to become rich if someone is just willing to work for it.
Other than the land, Columbus and Smith both spoke of the people who inhabited it, the Indians. All Europeans saw the Indians as savages. But explorers, wanted to learn from them and establish a trading system with them. The explorers realized that the Indians knew how to use the land to its full potential...
