Indonesia: Modern or so-called-Modern?
In this 21st century, progress in science and technology has been growing so fast. The benefits of progress itself can be perceived directly by everyone. Now, every profession requires high-end technology. Even some industries have more machines as their labor instead of human. The transformation of industries from human-labor to machine-labor is called modernization. Modernization itself means progress, cultural transformation based on mastering science and technology. According to Soerjono Soekamto, there 6 requirements needed in modernization: 1) scientific thinking: to think skeptically, analytically, critically, objective, and accept criticism and opinion, 2) transparency in administration and bureaucratic, 3) up-to-date, objective, centralization in collecting data, 4) medias should provide educative and objective data, 4) high-level organization with discipline (time management and systematic thinking) and future oriented (educable, mastering science & technology, and deposit saving).
Indonesia has been showing great progress each year. The irrational way of thinking of most people is now changing to the rational one. Besides the progress, Indonesia also has residents that tend to be consumptive. Well, in the macroeconomics’ side it is good to consume more because it will increase the Gross Domestic product, but it is good on the other side? Is it what people call it modern or modern itself works the way people called it?
There are some facts in Indonesia that show we are on the process of modernization. From the science and technology’s side, for instance, there is the invention of communication devices such as cellphone and email. Invention of transportation also counted as a progress in modernization also because it is simplify human’s life by inventing planes, hybrid cars that also eco-friendly, and cruises.
