Some Changes in Vietnamese Education
Education helps children develop their virtues and faculties. Education is a complicated affair as it is supposed to equip children for their lives. Since life styles are always changing, the contents of education must necessary modify to correspond to outside practical lives. So when a child leaves the school, he or she may lead to a useful life. Education is also one of the most important steps that take a country to a better level. Stepping into the 21st century, Vietnamese educational system is still weak in quality, unbalanced in structure and not linked with practice. Furthermore, the training is not linked with employment. “Though the literacy rate is high, averaging 94 percent, the levels of overall education are quite low in Vietnam. Schooling is free and compulsory for five years, but attendance drops off dramatically after primary school” (Aliprandini). In the Vietnamese traditional, the children are supposed to learn mainly subjects: reading, writing and mathematics. The chalkboards and text books are the main tools that the teachers use for instruction. Rote memory is insisted upon and examinations are based on this learning technique. There is not much of difference from year to year on the way children are tested. These examinations don’t test all the faculties of children, so they are rarely taught to learn for themselves.
Numerous lecturers nowadays complain that their students are passive during lessons. Students, most of the time, mutely sit with dull eyes and insipid faces, which makes teachers find it difficult to discover how much students have understood what they have been taught. Students don't even raise hands to express their viewpoints until teachers ask questions. They are very pleased with being followers. Being aware of the limitation of this education system, Vietnamese people in general and parents in specific wish it changed....
