Emerging Leadership Theories
Leadership theories and approaches fall under two basic types known as transactional and transformational. Transactional is an approach that requires a leader-follower relationship in which there is a form of exchange or reward for obtaining a goal or task. On the other hand, transformational leadership is an approach that involves a more motivational and inspirational awareness in which followers can grow and become better for the good of all. The difference with the two is that one is more of a nurturing process and the other is more of a business arrangement. Under these approaches other leadership theories emerged that include servant, authentic, ethical and full range leadership theory (FRLT). All four theories have there own unique approaches yet also share similarities of a common good. This paper will examine these new leadership approaches, discuss similarities, differences, perspectives and cover the moral and ethical value behind them.
The characteristics of servant, authentic, ethical and FRLT can be thoroughly studied by discussing all these leadership approaches and comparing it to Greenleaf’s perspective on each theory. Each theory have common factors, along with different perspectives but they all fall under the same basic concept of ethics, values, morals and good intentions.
Servant leadership
Servant leaders focus on serving the needs of others. Servant leaders want to serve, putting follower’s needs first. This type of leadership is a developed through an aspiration to lead. It is a foundation built on religion, philosophy and research. The purpose of a servant leader is to serve the common good of all rather than just for financial profits.
