Homeless a hard lesson to learn
Homeless is trending in this country in January 2015, 564,708 people were homeless on a given night in the United States.(National Alliance To end homeless para2), This is where my story starts. In September 2011, I woke up to and discovered that my husband left our family and took everything we acquired doing our marriage of 11 years. I had a car and apartment that costs 900.00 a month which I couldn't afford even if I were working. So we became one of the statistics of homeless.
The next three weeks were the hardest in my life. We lived in the car, and lying to my daughter school, so they wouldn’t take xxxxx away from me. While xxxx was in school, I searched and searched for places that will help us. At first, the no’s came and came again. Then at the start of the 3rd week, we found an organization called Housing Opportunities. This non-for-profit organization helps you to better yourself. Their mission statement is a step in, step up, step forward. I was immediately accepted to start the program. They placed us in a shelter, which looks like more a motel. They gave me vouchers to get furniture and other necessary items. Within a week, we had a full two bedroom furnish apartment. I felt so humble that there were people out there that will help a stranger out.
The first and foremost task was finding a job. I haven't worked since my daughter was born, so my skills were not the best, but within three weeks I had a job of custodian of a school. Which only paid minimum wage, I thought to myself how in the world I would be able to live on this. It took time and a lot of soul searching to accomplish a lot in this program. I took classes and, finance, cooking, and everything that is needed to survive by myself. My mind setting at this time was, “that I have to have someone take care of me”. Over the next...
