In a heartless society that’s destroys freedom and identity, one man, Equality stands out and goes against every rule of the council. In Equality’s society everyone is “equal.” Being equal removes competition and self-awareness. The council doesn’t allow for an individual to be happy. They men time to think about life because it is against the rules of the council. Freedom is taken away from every man and men only do what the council wishes you to do. Without freedom and identity men become uncreative, uncompetitive, uninspired, who only work, eat, sleep, and die of exhaustion.
The rules of the council doesn’t allow for man to be creative, have knowledge, and improve in life. Equality is different from all the other men because he is more intelligent, taller, and better looking, “we asked so many questions that the teachers forbade it.”(23) This shoes how the council doesn’t allow for men to ask questions because it gives men knowledge that will make them think about their society. Equality discovers a hole near the uncharted forest, but instead of informing the council about it he decides to go in it, “It is forbidden’ they answered, we said: the council doesn’t know of this hole, so it can’t be forbidden.”(31) Equality knows that he was breaking the rules by not telling the council about his discovery, but he decides to ignore it and make an excuse, which shows how Equality breaks the rules of the council and discovers new knowledge that lies under inside that hole. While Equality was working he takes notice of the uncharted forest, “There lies the uncharted forest, about which men must not think.”(31) The council controls the men and keeps them inside their territory, by telling men that thinking beyond the woods is against the rules and they shall be punished if they do. The council has many rules that prohibits men from enjoying their life because men only do what the council wishes them to do.
