PART ONE AND PART TWO: THESIS STATEMENT AND INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH: I would like to start off by defining the word relativism. Relativism is the belief that there is not absolute truth, only the truths that a particular individual or culture happen to believe. So when speaking about one’s culture, this means that an individual human beliefs and activities should be understood by others in terms of that individual’s own culture. There are arguments for and against cultural relativism which is why I chose this topic. Throughout this paper, I will speak on the different arguments with agreeing/disagreeing on actions, responses towards a cultures behavior, and if people should be held responsible for immoral behavior when most of their culture behaves the same way.
PART THREE: Cultural relativism, in my point of view, is neither right nor wrong. Everyone, no matter the culture, has their way of doing things. This is mainly because of how they were raised and what they were brought up to believe in. When viewing an individual from another culture, you may think he/she is wrong for what they do or what they believe in but who are we to judge on a culture that’s different from ours. I can assure you, the same way we may think they are wrong for certain activities, different cultures may think the same way about our culture. The theory of this matter is an explanation of why different societies have different ideas concerning morals.
PART FOUR: So what should our responses be to behavior in other cultures that are disturbing or seem morally wrong? In my opinion, you are unable to change one’s beliefs but I do feel that it depends on the location.
