The Benefits of Marijuana
Marijuana is known to people throughout the world, more commonly called “Cannabis” and it has been around for a lot longer than most people would think. In no way is cannabis a new discovery, it has been around for thousands of years and has many uses other than being a drug. The earliest recorded date that marijuana (hemp) was used was in 6000 B.C. China, and it was used to make clothing, “The earliest known woven fabric was apparently of hemp, and over the centuries the plant was used for food, incense, cloth, rope, and much more.” (Guither 1). Some researchers agree that Marijuana is in itself a very harmless drug and while they are some downsides to it the downside to smoking weed is far less harmful then the downsides to smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. Dr. Mitch Earleywine, who is a University of Southern California psychologist and who has also written books on the topic of marijuana believes that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol. “The evidence is clear”, he told DRCNet. "Cannabis has no lethal dose, so you can't die from it. The impact on the brain structure for cannabis is nil, but there can be very serious brain function changes with alcohol abuse. Also, more dramatic liver functions are impaired with alcohol. Malnutrition, B-vitamin deficiency, and Korsakoff's Disorder are all linked to alcohol, but not cannabis." (Earleywine progress.org) Cannabis has been around for such a very long time and not until the 1930’s was it made illegal, so the big question is how could something that’s been legal for thousands of years all of a sudden be illegal. The benefits of legalizing marijuana would be numerous and beneficial, especially medically and socially.
The biggest and the most important fact that I have learned from my research is how beneficial marijuana is if used for medical purposes. Countless studies have been done and proven that cannabis is an effective painkiller especially in cases of HIV...
